Decolonising Research: an Activist’s Tool

Raphael Van Arkadie

13.00-13.45 (BST)

This presentation explores the impacts of decolonial research practices, in particular the ways that it can impact young student activists and their relationship with their community.

Raphael Van Arkadie completed his MSc in Contemporary Identities from the University of Bristol, and his BA in Modern Languages and International Studies from the University of Bath. His work focuses on the multitude of ways we conceptualise, theorise and experience Black identity with Bristol being the main location of research. His research has engaged with multiple concepts, ranging from identity in music to investigating how decolonising research practices might provide new insights into identity and community. He has also been involved with various black led grassroots organisations within Bristol that aim to support the local community, including Afrikan Connexions Consortium - who pushed through a reparations motion in Bristol City Council last year - and the Afrikan Caribbean Assembly, who work on facilitating deeper connections between different Black community circles.
